Keeping Track

I try to keep track of the quilts I make. I have a blog page on a quilt forum where I put everything as soon as it is finished (pictures, dimensions, types of materials used, etc.). Then, I blog about it in more depth here on The Eclectic Abuela

I also have a written journal, and this year I'm trying a diary of sorts. I've never been good at keeping a day-by-day record, so we will see how that goes!

I've also been updating the Quilt Gallery here on the blog today. I believe the pictures are now up-to-date with the quilts I have finished.

According to my records, I made 11 quilts in 2013, 26 in 2014, and 24 in 2015. So far this year, I have finished 2 (though 2 others are nearing completion). The numbers aren't really important to me--I just like the sense of accomplishment that keeping track brings.

And finally, a pretty picture. My son and his girlfriend visited last night and brought these. They bring a lovely bit of color to January.

Jamestown Landing--Part 3

I finally completed all the units for my Jamestown Landing quilt. Now I'm starting the assembly.

It is a complicated layout, so I'm going very slowly and comparing each piece with the instructions in the book, String Fling by Bonnie Hunter.

Up close, I didn't feel like the overall pattern was showing up, but when I took photographs, I saw it clearly. Sometimes you have to step back to see it better!

Lots (and lots!) of pieces to go, but so far, I am very pleased with it.

Previous posts about this quilt can be found HERE (Part 1) and HERE (Part 2).

From Limbo to Finished!

Last post, I told you about the quilt in limbo--this week, I finished it!

It is a simple string quilt with a scrappy patchwork back--not fancy, but colorful!

2.5" white strips in center of blocks and 2.5" white sashing and border

7" Squares for a patchwork back

With the trimmings from the back, I made scrappy binding.

A close-up of some of the fun fabrics I used.

Very glad to have this one done--it is too pretty to remain unfinished!

Stash report:

In this month--0 yards
Out this month--16 yards

Revisiting the Quilt in Limbo

I pieced a string quilt way back in June (HERE) and July (HERE), but never got it finished. I couldn't decide how I wanted to do the back, and time got away from me. Now it is time to get back to it!

I decided to piece the back from 7 inch squares I had cut from scraps. I realize that a pieced back on a string quilt may lead to some thickness because of all the seams, but my machine has never yet balked at sewing thick areas, so I'm going to try it.

The scraps are random, though I did try to alternate light/dark when I put it together.

Now to layer and glue baste it--I hope to do this tomorrow.

A Warm Feeling

As quilters, we often give quilts as gifts. "Thank you"s are great, and I really appreciate them, but I got an email from a friend this week that made me smile.

When our departmental secretary retired over a year ago, I made a quilt for her. She thanked me more than once at the time, and I could tell that she liked the quilt. We are having a cold spell this week, and last night, I received an email from her saying thank you again. Attached was this picture:

How nice to see my quilt in the act of keeping its owner warm!

She is Plain, but She is Done!

I've been working on units for several quilts (small pieces), and I was feeling the need to finish something.

This is from the "Wickedly Easy" quilt pattern (available free online). The pieces felt enormous! I used leftover bits and pieces on the back.

I'm not thrilled with the lack of color/value contrast, but she is soft and warm, and I'm sure someone will love her.

They Can't All Be Beautiful!

I've been working on a quilt. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I chose the fabrics and put them together, but this poor girl is homely!

I've pieced a panel to put into her backing, so she would feel a little better.

She is a quilt for donation, so I'm sure someone out there will love her.

Allietare--Sixth Clue and Reveal

The final clue and reveal was posted for Allietare, Bonnie Hunter's 2016 mystery quilt.

I have my blocks together (in spite of a nastynasty cold), but I haven't done the borders yet. Here is a picture of my progress thus far.

I'll post more of a summing up when the top is complete.
