Rain, Rain, and More Rain

Southwest Missouri has been deluged the past few days.

What does this have to do with quilting? I store my quilts in a large plastic trash barrel in the basement until I have enough to take to the place I donate them. The basement flooded, and the trash barrel floated, tipping over in the water, and my quilts are soaked! (This is not to mention all the other floating totes that now have to be cleaned out as well). YUK!

We are blessed, however, not to have sustained damage--many aren't so lucky.

I'll be washing and drying things this week--probably all week long!

Edited to add: Washer, dryer, and hot water heater out of commission, so coin laundry is the next step. YUK!

I'm linking with Fiber Tuesday 109 at The Quilting Room with Mel .

    1. Thanks--the basement is draining now, but my washer and dryer aren't working. I guess I'm going to have to carry all the wet (heavy) stuff to the coin laundry--ugg.

  2. I have TONS of fabrics, etc, stored in plastic tubs in our basement. We've had water come in, thru the window wells, in the past. Water seeped into some of the buckets, thru the handle areas, and I had to wash and dry all that fabric (that kind of bucket is gone now). Sorry your quilts got wet. Hope you dry out soon. All that rain is in my area now (northeast Illinois).

  3. So glad you had no damage, but sorry you'll have to re-wash all those quilts. Whereabouts in SW MO do you live? I have an aunt and uncle (he's 95) that live in Ozark.

  4. I live in mid-Missouri, but went to college at SMSU, so a big part of my heart belongs to Springfield. I'm sure feeling it for all in the area dealing with the flood. Hope it dries up and recovery starts very soon.

  5. Hi.I just found your site from Quilting Blogs and actually gasped when I read about your quilts getting wet! I know worse things have happened but also know how special our art is! I'm happy you were able to salvage them but sorry cause it's so much work cleaning up after flooding. Hope things improve for you very soon.

    1. Thanks, Mary. I've started the clean-up. I think the quilts should be fine with a good wash. Needless to say, we are rethinking our storage area. Lots of cinder blocks and 2x4s to raise everything up!

  6. I'm sorry to hear about your water troubles. I live in Louisiana and sent that nastiness your way. Baton Rouge flooded in the fall, and now people in other areas are in flood clean up. We are lucky to live on a hill but it's not golden: we're having gator issues. Apparently they don't care for deep water!
Here's hoping you manage the cleaning and washing. One of the many sweet things about quilts is that they can handle lots of life's disasters. Best wishes!

    1. I'm thankful not to have to contend with gators!

We are cleaning up and replacing things slowly but surely.

      Thanks for visiting.

  7. Oh no how upsetting. Yet how positive of you to say you didn't fare as bad as others. Up here in southern Ontario Canada we had 3" of rain in a couple of days and so we are drying out still further north in Quebec along the St. Lawrence it's terrible the flooding. Hugs to you. I hope you get everything all sorted: quilts AND washing machinery.
