Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2017

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2017 was hosted by soscrappy. Each month, we worked with a color--at the end of the year, I put my blocks together. Here is the result.

One of the months, we were to use multi-colored scraps. Because I wanted to stick with single colors in my Rainbow quilt, I used that month to create this quilt which I called Stringing Beads.

During the month when we were to use neutrals, I worked on a couple of other projects. (I had used neutral strings each month in my rainbow-colored blocks.) One was my leader/ender project, and the other was a string quilt (as yet unfinished) which I call Boxes of Strings. I'll post instructions for it when I finish!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge--October--Pink

This month's challenge color is pink.

Once again, I made some diagonal blocks all pink and others half pink/half neutral. I also made some all pink straight-set blocks.

I've been thinking of how I will put this year's blocks together. I worked up a couple of ideas on EQ7 which I am still refining.

This one has arcs (like a rainbow!) of colors. I like it, but I'm not sure about it.

This one is straight-set--I'm thinking I like is better than the first. I would need to add a border to the top like the one I have indicated on the bottom.

More thinking is in order!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge--September--Orange

A new month--a new color. I enjoyed the neutral month; I used neutrals in several different projects. Now--on to orange (Just about the exact opposite of neutral!).

I'm continuing with the string blocks using the month's color. Here is a sampling of the orange blocks.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this quilt comes together!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge--August--Neutral

Since I've been using neutral strings in my monthly rainbow blocks, I'm using this month for neutral scraps in other projects.

My Leader & Ender project this year is a two rail fence--I want to make an Attic Stairs quilt (or five!).

I've got LOTS of blocks already, so I'm thinking I'll just keep making them and see how many donation quilts I wind up with. I'm using scrappy color/scrappy neutral pairs.

I've also been working on a "What if I...?" quilt. When I was making Stringing Beads, I thought, "What if I used triangles instead of trapezoids in the middle of the blocks?" "Okay, what if I offset the blocks?" "Hmmm, how about if I control the colors?" I was designing a new quilt before I even finished the first one!

I'm thinking of calling it Boxes of Strings. I'm going to consider borders--not sure yet how I will finish it.

So, neutral strings, neutral L & Es, and the Sapphire Stars Mystery from Kevin the Quilter includes neutrals in this clue (Clue #3)--I'm keeping up with the challenge!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge--July--Blue

I'm continuing the Rainbow Scrap Challenge--I have really enjoyed making these blocks each month (though my scrap collection is no smaller than when I began!).


My July blocks are blue--not my favorite color, but I do have quite a bit of blue variety.

I'm looking forward to assembling this quilt--it is the first rainbow-themed one I have done.




In other news--I finished the quilt from the April multi-colored blocks. I didn't want to use them in my rainbow quilt, so I invented a way to use them on their own.

Stringing Beads--An Original Design

I love making string quilts. When I came up with this design, I decided to combine it with the April Multicolor Rainbow Scrap Challenge from soscrappy.

I have no idea why the color went wonky in the last photo!


This is the most densely quilted piece I have ever made, but I like the effect. I am glad to have this one done. The quilting took a long time, (I'm not usually one who uses quilting for effect--it is my least favorite part of the process, and it is the one I am the least confident about.) but I'm glad I did it.


It is nice to see an idea become reality! Thanks, soscrappy, for spurring me to create.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge--June--Yellow & May--Green

With the flooding cleanup in May, I fell behind in my photography of my RSC blocks. This month (June) is yellow and last month was green. I decided to wait to photograph and post them both at the same time.

Here is a sample of my sunny June blocks:

While yellow is not my favorite color, these make me smile. (Of course, Big Bird, ruby slippers, and a French hen help!)

Rainbow Scrap Challenge--April--Multicolor--Part 2

I'm putting together the multicolor blocks. You can read about them HERE.

There are lots of places to match, but I am making progress. I'm calling this one "Stringing Beads." It reminds me of the beaded curtains that people hang in doorways.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge--April--Multicolor

April's rainbow scrap challenge is to use  multicolored scraps.


Because I've been sticking to one color during previous months, and I am planning to use the blocks in a rainbow-type quilt, I decided to do the multicolor blocks for a separate project.

I'd been designing a block in my head, so I tried it out.  I plotted it on EQ7 and then started sewing. While there are lots of multicolor strings in the blocks, I used a constant dark red for the centers, and I added some strings in solids and blenders to tame the confusion!


I have well over a hundred of these made already, so I'll soon be setting them together into a top.

I'm participating in  the Rainbow Scrap Challenge this year. You can find out about it at soscrappy. The March color is red. 
 

Red is my favorite color, so I have plenty of scraps to choose from.


Here are some of my string blocks. I was just playing around with a layout here; I've no idea how it will end up! Some are full string blocks, and some are half neutral/half color.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge--February--Aquamarine

I'm participating in  the Rainbow Scrap Challenge this year. You can find out about it at soscrappy. The February color is aquamarine.

This is not a favorite color for me, but even so, I found lots of scraps to use!


Here are some of my string blocks. I was just playing around with a layout here; I've no idea how it will end up! Some are full string blocks, and some are half neutral/half color.

Add these to last month's purple. Though they aren't pictured, I did some of the half neutral/half color blocks for this set too.

This challenge is a lot of fun--I'm using up strings and getting to play with color--win/win!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge--January--Purple

I'm trying the Rainbow Scrap Challenge this year. You can find out about it at soscrappy. The January color is purple.

As I cut for Bonnie Hunter's En Provence mystery, I set aside purple strings for later use. Little did I know I would dive into them so quickly!

I'm going to make string blocks of each color for an as yet undetermined project (maybe another String Crossroads). I love string blocks (and lovelovelove making them), so putting them together at the end of the year should be a lot of fun.
